White privilege is not an easy topic to talk about. In fact, arguably in certain circles the number one rule about white privilege is you don't talk about white privilege. Jennifer and Jeremy return to provide a thoughtful, respectful, and personal conversation about racial privilege. What it is, why it's so hard to talk about, and ways we can move the dialogue forward in a healthy way. We also discuss Princeton Theological Seminary's recent decision to rescind the Kuyper Prize from Pastor Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian Church.

Thank you Jeremy and Jennifer for another insightful, deeply entertaining conversation! Listeners, let us know what you thought of the show. :)

Dave Wallace and I have had several conversations about whitewashing over the past year. He and I come from very different places, and that becomes evident in our differences of opinion. But despite our disagreements, I've appreciated our civil, respectful dialogues about a sensitive topic. It's something I wish we saw more of in the mainstream press.

In any event, at long last Ghost in the Shell has come out in theaters, and Dave and I caught up one more time to discuss our thoughts on the movie and where we stood on the whitewashing controversy.

Thank you Dave for an honest & thoughtful discussion!

Critics are sharply divided over 2017's live action remake of Beauty and the Beast. Find out where Eugene and I stand on this box office behemoth. We talk about the visual imagery, the music, the characters, the new scenes, how it compares to the 1991 animated classic, and Eugene tests his wits on an impromptu Disney Princess quiz!

It doesn’t seem humanly possible. Swim 2.4 miles in open water. Bike 112 miles--farther than the distance from Manhattan to Philadelphia. And then, assuming you have any energy left, run a full length marathon, 26.2 miles. All back to back to back, in less than 17 hours. That is the Ironman triathlon—widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. (And not to be confused with “Iron Man” Tony Stark of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.) Today, I speak with three men who have all completed full length Ironman races and are training for more.

I ask them to do a bit of soul searching--while I do a bit of my own--as they talk about what drives their ambition to compete in this crazy race. They discuss what it takes to finish an Ironman and whether or not it’s fair to describe Ironman training as “selfish.” (Lots of shout outs to significant others in this episode!) We talk about training schedules, logistics, nutrition, and the mental challenges of completing a race. And in a twist, regular contributor—and triathlete in her own right—Jennifer Lee Koh joins us to reveal what it’s like to be an “Ironmate.”

Many thanks to Rob Koh, Jack Chen, and Sam Chung for taking the time to talk and reflect! Sam, Jack, and Rob are all part of the Trinity Endurance Club or TEC—a group that Sam started to build and foster a community of fitness fans. This was such a fun conversation, and I am so inspired by your stories!

If Angry Asian Man had become a professor rather than a blogger, his career might have looked a lot like Dr. Nancy Wang Yuen's. Nancy spent years having candid conversations with actors, directors, talent agents and others in the industry. Her research led to her book, "Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism." In our wide ranging conversation, she shares her insights about Hollywood, race, structural inequality, and overcoming stereotypes. We also talk Oscars, the first movie Nancy watched (think Cher), and as a self-identified "pop culture geek," her geekiest pop culture interest.

Thank you Nancy for your entertaining book and discussion!

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Eugene is back for a conversation about The Lego Batman Movie! I offer my bold outrageous theory that the movie — while perfectly kid friendly — is ultimately not a “kids movie” (and who it’s really for). Eugene reveals what he thought about Will Arnett’s Batman and how this movie compared to the original. Hint: It’s not a sequel. And we both talk about our favorite scenes.

We are HOURS away from the inauguration of President Donald Trump and I am THRILLED to have Jeremy Weese on the show. And even more good news, regular contributor Jennifer Lee Koh is back. We didn't scare her away!

We take a deep dive into why white evangelicals voted for Donald Trump in such large numbers and why Jeremy thinks evangelicals "don't know how to vote." Jennifer explains what sanctuary cities are and we discuss the looming battle between federal and local governments over immigration. Thank you so much Jennifer and Jeremy for coming by! Enjoy the show!

Near death experiences have reentered pop culture in recent years with best-sellers like “Proof of Heaven” and “Heaven is for Real.” But are near death experiences legit? Are NDE’ers actually having out of body experiences and travelling towards a light at the end of the tunnel? Or are they merely illusions of the mind? Today we tell the harrowing, sometimes tragic, and extraordinary stories of three individuals who might just possibly have travelled to the other side.

When I first started podcasting, I had initially envisioned a debate and discussion type format with regular contributors, along the lines of Slate’s Political Gabfest. That idea eventually evolved into the “storytelling” format I use for regular episodes. But I finally had the opportunity to try the gabfest format after my friends Jennifer Lee Koh and Grace Ong agreed to join me for a conversation I’m calling “Post-Tiger Parenting in the Age of President Trump.” This was a really fun and interesting discussion and I hope you enjoy it. Thank you so much to Grace and Jennifer for playing along! :)

There will be more content coming to the podcast in the forthcoming weeks, including a full more “traditional” episode as well as my interview with an inspirational speaker.

Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of Donald Trump's presidential campaign since last summer, the media is missing a huge (YUGE!) reason for his appeal. Donald Trump’s secret appeal is an issue that goes straight to the heart of what it means to be an American, and may have major consequences for the future of American politics.

After a loooong hiatus, new content is coming to the podcast soon. In the meantime, my friend, the amazingly talented Grace Ong, has produced an edition of Episode 6: The Death of Elisa Lam translated completely into Mandarin.

When Grace first approached me with this idea, I honestly wasn't sure it would be possible. I certainly couldn't contribute, since I can't read Chinese or speak Mandarin. But through incredible persistence and effort (and possibly some help from the supermoon!) this busy mother of two managed to find time to translate the entire transcript of the episode, record the narration in Mandarin in her own voice, and edit the content into a finished product. Grace is clearly a person who needs her own podcast! :)

Grace told me she was motivated to do this project in order to spread word about Elisa's story to a wider Mandarin speaking audience, particularly given the wild rumors and speculation about Elisa Lam's death that were just as rampant in China as they were in the U.S. If you happen to know anyone who's primary speaking language is Mandarin, please consider recommending this episode to them.

And thank you Grace for putting this episode together!

Whitewashing has been a hot topic in the news lately. There's been a lot of talk about what it is and why it matters. But what can actually be done about it? How can we STOP Hollywood whitewashing? Here's my take on how whitewashing can be put to rest, once and for all. Along the way, we encounter Judd Apatow, a YouTube celebrity, The 48 Laws of Power, and much more. This episode is my call to arms. Check it out and let me know if you agree.

21 year old Elisa Lam was a college student from Vancouver traveling in Los Angeles when she went missing. Her parents called the police, and LAPD asked the public for help in finding her. What happened next was bizarre and mysterious, and became instant fodder for conspiracy theorists worldwide.

Dec 10, 2015

In the last episode I discussed the origins of the Common Core and its pros and cons. But what if you are a parent or student living in the Common Core world today? I interviewed former high school math teacher Hemant Mehta, and we discussed practical strategies parents, students, and teachers can adopt in learning math. Among the questions we discussed were:

What do I do if I don’t understand the “new” way schools are teaching math to my child?

What is “number sense” and how can I help my child obtain it?

How do I form a constructive relationship with teachers?

What do math teachers wish parents knew about teaching and education?

What if my child is bored or the lessons are “too easy”?

What are Hemant’s thoughts on the Common Core standards? About standardized testing?

I hope you find Hemant’s advice as useful as I did! Interview recorded on December 2, 2015.

Oct 14, 2015

Today we explain Kevin McCarthy's STUNNING decision not to run for Speaker of the House, why he pulled out, and why this means something far beyond the Beltway.

Oct 1, 2015

What Just Happened? is a podcast about recent history. Today we discuss Black Lives Matter. #blacklivesmatter is more than a hashtag. It's a nuts and bolts organization run by three female activists, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. The group went viral following Michael Brown's death in Ferguson, Missouri. They've disrupted campaign events of candidates like Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley, and Hillary Clinton. How they got started and what they stand for may surprise you.
