Does it feel like the country is tearing itself apart? That a volcano’s about to erupt? That, as some suggest, we’re headed toward a “second civil war”? Why is all of this happening? And why is it happening NOW? David has some answers.

David and Eugene have a genuine debate over whether Mission Impossible: Fallout was one of the best Mission Impossible movies EVER or fell short of a truly great M:I movie. David talks about an important change to Ethan Hunt’s character that made him brilliantly Tom Cruisey, while Eugene discusses his own real life experience flying a helicopter (!). PLUS we spend a few bonus minutes debating the very polarizing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Warning: SPOILERS! And thanks for listening!

Who are you? In today’s episode, Eugene and I plumb the depths of our upbringing to talk about our childhoods, our values, and our attitudes toward race, religion, and politics. Eugene reveals what happened when he played “the line game” as a resident advisor in-training at Michigan, and I talk about why I consider myself the “black sheep” of the family, at least when it comes to my faith.

Your smartphone is your constant companion. Your connection to the world. An extension of you. But is your smartphone REALLY bad for you? In this episode, Eugene Chang and I talk about how we use our iPhone and Android devices respectively, and discuss whether this is a good or bad thing. Eugene talks about some apps that have been especially useful for him as a techy, and I describe (and attempt to defend) the Rube Goldberg like contortions I make to "stick it to big telecom."

I’m usually not an aggressive self-promoter, but having listened to several reviews of the latest Star Wars movie, I believe our podcast offers one of the richest, most engaging discussions you’ll find of this film. And that’s due to my remarkable friends Jennifer, Rob, and Eugene, who joined me in a no holds barred review of the film. We talk about what we loved about The Last Jedi, what troubled us, Jennifer’s theory of what may happen in Episode 9 (hint: rise up!), and much more. This was one of my favorite episodes of the year and I hope you enjoy it.

The Ironman Triathlon is a grueling one day endurance race consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.22 mile full length marathon run. It’s considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. To accomplish this feat once in your lifetime is impressive enough. But to return to this race 3, 4, 5 times or more? Today, I welcome back on the podcast Sam Chung, Jack Chen, and Rob Koh who talked with me about their Ironman experience back in March. What drives them back to Ironman year after year? What’s it like to have to drop out mid-race? And how does one of them train with his six year old daughter? Thank you Rob, Jack, and Sam for coming back to the show!

The K-pop boy band ‘BTS’ made history on November 19, 2017 as the first ever Korean band to perform on the American Music Awards. If you’re mystified by the worldwide phenomenon known as K-pop, you’re not alone. K-pop has experienced a massive surge in popularity in recent years. K-pop has come a LONG way from its roots twenty five years ago when a single live performance by a rookie band electrified the nation. And it’s remarkable that what is essentially “Top 40” music from the relatively small nation of South Korea has reached such epic heights of global domination.
Our story beings with a 19 year old high school dropout, a lonely 13 year old teenage girl, and “a boy named Soo.”

This is (finally!) the second half of my conversation with Pastor Darryl Brumfield and Professor Jennifer Lee Koh. We talk about immigration — a timely topic given the recent news. Jennifer shares her perspective as someone who runs an immigration clinic and is very much witnessing what’s happening with undocumented immigrants on the ground, while Darryl gives his thoughts of how immigration does and should relate to the Christian church. Finally, I discuss an article written by a progressive writer who wonders whether the democrats have gone too far in embracing immigration.
Thank you again Darryl and Jennifer for another amazing episode!

The second half of my interview with Darryl Brumfield. Darryl has spent more than thirty years as both a software engineer and as a pastor. For the last several years he’s been serving at Newsong Church in Santa Ana, CA. He’s a gifted speaker, funny story teller, and, as someone who grew up in the city of Compton during white flight, someone with an extremely unique and fascinating childhood, with experiences he’s carried with him to this day. Last year, Darryl published his first book called, “Hearing God & Slaying Giants in Your Career.” I had the pleasure of speaking to Darryl, learning more about how he thinks, and simply shearing the amazing stories about his life.
Many thanks to Darryl for his arresting insight and generosity of spirit!

Two quick corrections: The Watts Riots happened in 1965, not 1968. And there were actually two “Great Migrations” of African Americans from the south, the first wave in the 1920s, and the which began in 1940.

This is a special episode. The regular What Just Happened podcast will be back again soon!
I'm thrilled to be part of the launch of the brand new PAAC Podcast! This is a project that PAAC co-founders Lydia Suh and Liz Lin had been wanting to do for months. And whether you call it divine intervention or just remarkable timing, the stars aligned to make it happen.
Today’s episode is about origin stories. How Lydia and Liz met, how the PAAC Facebook group and podcast came to be, and looking ahead, what they aspire for the future.
We want this podcast to be an extension of the Progressive Asian American Christian community. To that end, please subscribe to the podcast, spread the word to your friends and family, and let us know what you’d like to hear on the show. We would also be very grateful if you helped others discover the show by leaving a rating and review on iTunes.
Thank you to everyone who helped put this podcast together. And special thanks to all the members of the PAAC Facebook community, who have created a space and community where people feel at home.

The modern workplace can be stressful--to say the least. Most of us work out of necessity, and yet we also have unique motivations that fuel our creativity. What inspires us not just to work but to do our very best? Is there a right or wrong approach to work? What drives highly ambitious or ultra competitive people? To help answer these questions, I’m joined by Eugene Chang and licensed therapist Tim Long. Tim helps us interpret our different approaches to work through the lens of a professional counselor, and sheds light on the hidden forces at play (no pun intended) in how we approach our careers.
Many thanks to Tim and Eugene!!!

Apologies for being blunt, but why does government suck right now? And what can we do about it? Once again, it’s something the mainstream media hasn’t told you. Here's my theory for why politics is so dysfunctional -- and the one (and maybe ONLY) thing that will fix it.

White privilege is not an easy topic to talk about. In fact, arguably in certain circles the number one rule about white privilege is you don't talk about white privilege. Jennifer and Jeremy return to provide a thoughtful, respectful, and personal conversation about racial privilege. What it is, why it's so hard to talk about, and ways we can move the dialogue forward in a healthy way. We also discuss Princeton Theological Seminary's recent decision to rescind the Kuyper Prize from Pastor Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian Church.
Thank you Jeremy and Jennifer for another insightful, deeply entertaining conversation! Listeners, let us know what you thought of the show. :)
