I’ve been sick for the past few weeks. When I’m sick I find I want to turn off my brain, meaning no news, books, podcasts, etc. But for some reason, I find watching videos about cars to be strangely relaxing. This is probably because I’m otherwise so removed from cars and the car industry. For me, it’s like the equivalent of the Food Network or HGTV. In this podcast extra, I ask Eugene for his thoughts about the one car that appears to be dividing auto journalists and car enthusiasts more than any other. We also discuss why we both feel minivans are superior to SUVs and share a quick update on our weight loss and fitness goals. Next week, we’ll be back with another full episode of the podcast. Thanks for listening!

Opening excerpt from the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, Ep. 108: https://www.unnamedautomotivepodcast.com/108

Special thanks to Bjørn Nyland and Doug Demuro, whose videos entertained and kept me company while I was under the weather:

"It is a majestic, magnificent, and ludicrous vehicle, but curiously hard to love.” - Jason Barlow

Eugene and I often talk about what it means to be a second generation Asian American. But, at least in my world, I don’t often hear directly from the first generation—the wave of immigrants that came to the United States in large numbers starting in the late 1960s—about their own experiences. Because of language barriers, cultural barriers, and an overall generation gap, the voices of the immigrant generation are often silenced. For our 50th episode of the podcast, we have the pleasure of speaking with our dad, Dr. Chong Hwan Chang, who shares the story of his journey to the United States, why he made the unusual decision to return to Korea after more than thirty years, his perspective on what it means to be Asian American (and which one of us is his favorite, haha). Thanks dad for coming on the show! And thank you for listening!

Even in the modern age, culture tells us that real men are brave, courageous, strong, and — when necessary — protectors. And yet, healthy masculinity also means men embracing our feelings, being sensitive, kind, and tender. In this episode, David and Eugene discuss healthy versus toxic masculinity, why some traditionalists seem so resistant to change, and ultimately what it means to be a good man. Thanks for listening!

David and Eugene have had very different journeys to weight loss. As kids, David shopped at the “huskies” section of boy’s apparel, while skinny Eugene sometimes quite literally “forgot to eat.” In this episode, we share our personal experiences with managing weight, discuss why stress and lack of sleep are often at the heart of our weight issues, and get VERY practical with tips, tricks, and habits that ACTUALLY work for us. Thanks for listening!

NOTE: This is not a normal movie review. Instead in typical WJH fashion, David questions whether there may be a sinister theme lurking behind the effervescent and radiant Mary Poppins sequel, while Eugene questions David’s mode of movie watching (and sanity!). Thanks for listening!

Have you ever been asked “what your Myers-Briggs” is? In today’s episode, David and Eugene discuss the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. We talk about our own results, how they’ve changed over time, what we think of the various indicators, and how as parents we approach the budding personality types of our kids. Eugene and I really enjoy talking about personal consumer technology. In today’s episode, we revisit our first episode about smartphones (ep. 33), Eugene breaks down what Apple’s Screen Time has taught him about his smartphone usage, David talks YouTube, and we debate Tesla, Elon Musk, and the future of electric cars. Maybe I got it all wrong. I thought it was better to live a life of contentment and gratitude. But in today’s episode, Eugene and I discuss whether it’s better to be deeply unsatisfied with life, whether or not happiness is merely a state of mind, and how we both ended up in traditional, single breadwinner family structures. Thanks for listening!

“I assigned mystical qualities to his zipper teeth, his tattered jeans, his flat palms, as if these were not only different from other fathers’ but better, and now that he was in my life, I had not waited in vain. In 2016, NYT reporter Michael Luo—who was born and raised in the U.S.—was told by a stranger to “Go back to China!” His 7 year old daughter was there when it happened and later asked him, "Why did she say, ‘Go back to China?’ We’re not from China.” Since then countless Asian Americans have recognized the problem of “perpetual foreign syndrome” often disguised in the form of the classic question, “No, where are you from, really?"

What's less often talked about is whether it's possible to ask that question in a way that's NOT insensitive, offensive, or quite frankly, racist. I believe there is. In this special episode, Eugene and I discuss this and several other challenging questions related to our divergent Asian American identities. As always, thanks for listening!

"Productivity" has become a cottage industry in the modern world--with experts like Tim Ferriss and David Allen writing best selling books about getting things done. Yet what these productivity gurus often overlook is the purpose behind the hyper efficiency. Today on the show, David and Eugene get personal and talk about the purposes that drive and motivate their daily lives. Eugene also talks about how he overcomes his struggles with procrastination to become a more productive person. This is an episode you won't want to miss! :)

Eugene's 4 Levels of Productivity Operation ("PAPE"):

1: Defining PURPOSE in life.
2: Deciding on the ACTIVITIES that belong to this purpose.
3: Creating a PLAN to accomplish these activities.
4: Developing EFFICIENCIES in execution.

David and Eugene have a genuine debate over whether Mission Impossible: Fallout was one of the best Mission Impossible movies EVER or fell short of a truly great M:I movie. David talks about an important change to Ethan Hunt’s character that made him brilliantly Tom Cruisey, while Eugene discusses his own real life experience flying a helicopter (!). PLUS we spend a few bonus minutes debating the very polarizing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Warning: SPOILERS! And thanks for listening!

Your smartphone is your constant companion. Your connection to the world. An extension of you. But is your smartphone REALLY bad for you? In this episode, Eugene Chang and I talk about how we use our iPhone and Android devices respectively, and discuss whether this is a good or bad thing. Eugene talks about some apps that have been especially useful for him as a techy, and I describe (and attempt to defend) the Rube Goldberg like contortions I make to "stick it to big telecom."

This is the first of what hopefully will be a series of “conversations with my brother” about topics we think are interesting and relevant in our modern age. Thanks for listening!

I’m usually not an aggressive self-promoter, but having listened to several reviews of the latest Star Wars movie, I believe our podcast offers one of the richest, most engaging discussions you’ll find of this film. And that’s due to my remarkable friends Jennifer, Rob, and Eugene, who joined me in a no holds barred review of the film. We talk about what we loved about The Last Jedi, what troubled us, Jennifer’s theory of what may happen in Episode 9 (hint: rise up!), and much more. This was one of my favorite episodes of the year and I hope you enjoy it.

The Ironman Triathlon is a grueling one day endurance race consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.22 mile full length marathon run. It’s considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. To accomplish this feat once in your lifetime is impressive enough. But to return to this race 3, 4, 5 times or more? Today, I welcome back on the podcast Sam Chung, Jack Chen, and Rob Koh who talked with me about their Ironman experience back in March. What drives them back to Ironman year after year? What’s it like to have to drop out mid-race? And how does one of them train with his six year old daughter? Thank you Rob, Jack, and Sam for coming back to the show!
