If there's one major difference between Eugene and David, it's that one of us is extremely handy and the other is not. Eugene grew up watching shows like This Old House and New Yankee Workshop, while David ... let's just say for him putting together an Ikea end table is an accomplishment!

In this episode, Eugene provides insight on how to get better at handiness and repair, while David shares some of his coping mechanisms for quelling his fear of drill bits and instruction manuals . As always, we hope you are safe and thank you for listening! :)

What heresy is this? Who doesn't like to complete their to do lists? The sense of accomplishment? The glory?

In this episode, David and Eugene talk about how we stay organized and get stuff done. David asks for help with his problem of chronically losing track of tasks he's supposed to do, while Eugene discusses how he's learned over the years how to develop a routine, and why he sometimes DOESN'T like getting things done. Thanks for listening! :)

From K-dramas to the stars, our journey through television continues. Today, Eugene and David discuss episode one of the newest Star Trek franchise, Picard. Growing up, both of us were fans of The Next Generation, so returning to the world of Jean-Luc Picard feels a little like coming home. We talk through the many twists and turns of the pilot episode (Data's back!), what we liked and didn't like, and give our thoughts on the essence of what makes Star Trek, Star Trek. Live long and prosper, and thanks for listening!

It’s happening! Eugene is watching a Korean drama. And not just any, but the smash hit, Crash Landing On You. This show was popular enough even in the United States that there was a lengthy story about it in the Washington Post (link below). In today’s podcast, Eugene and David talk about episode 5 of the show, our likes and dislikes, North Korean culture, and our thoughts about Kdramas in general. Eugene also gives a verdict for what future (if any) K-dramas may have in his television consumption. Crash Landing is currently available on Netflix. As always, thank you for listening!

Apr 21, 2020

2020 was SUPPOSED to be a big year for flagship phones. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, OnePlus 8 and iPhone 12 are all on tap to be released this year. David and Eugene were also both planning to upgrade their phones this year as well, but COVID-19 has thrown this decision, like most other things, for a loop.

In this episode, we talk about what we ACTUALLY care about in terms of smartphones in terms of functionality, features, and price. And now that we're all at home, we also talk about our favorite streaming services, streaming "strategies," and what we're watching on our devices. Thank you for listening!

Apr 8, 2020

Do you love where you live? Or do you wish you could move? As we all shelter in place, Eugene and I discuss the places we’ve lived, and where we live now. We talk about what we love about our respective areas and things we wished were different.

I’ll be honest, this episode touched a nerve. Specifically, Eugene raises a couple of personally provocative questions in the middle of the episode that got me thinking about about the choices I’ve made about where we call home, and whether those decisions were the right ones. As always, thank you for listening!

Now more than ever, the world is looking for strong leaders who can provide comfort, vision, and determination through a time of crisis. Neither Eugene or David do Crossfit, Ironman, or bodybuilding contests -- although we’ve both run half marathons and at least one of us uses the app for Peloton. In this episode, we talk about our fitness and workout regimen. Eugene gets into the ups and downs of running, David discusses the best gym routine that works for him, and we talk workout tech, gym etiquette, and why David is terrible at running outdoors. “I never run with scissors. Actually, those last two words are unnecessary.” – Bill Murray

Feb 12, 2020

"Dominant groups do not give up their power easily." That's according to law professor and OG Tiger Mom Amy Chua. I've thought about this statement quite a bit, and I've come to reject this framing of our current state of the world. It's catchy but also panicky and outraged, and makes us feel hopeless and doomed.

I believe there's another way. While dominant groups may not give up power easily, there IS a way to resolve in vs. out-group conflicts peacefully and even (dare I say) "normally." And who couldn't use a strong dose of normal these days?

Here’s a hard truth: One day you may be forgotten. Eugene and David debate why that truth might be tough for some of us to swallow, and why it may be okay not to be remembered. Also in this episode, both David and Eugene were recently triggered watching “dads behaving badly.” We talk about what (respectively) triggered us about dad behavior in the wild. Nov 20, 2019

As we near the end of 2019, David and Eugene look back on what a year it’s been, and look ahead to 2020. Eugene describes how he sees God’s will for himself – whether it be broad and general or specific and concrete, while David rants about society’s "bait-and-switch" when it comes to children and technology, and we each revisit our purpose for our lives. As always, thanks for listening!

Should we be free range parents? David and Eugene discuss the concept of raising children in the spirit of greater independence and less supervision. And while both of us applaud the notion that children should take risks, make mistakes, and learn from failure, in our opinion, free range parenting has one MAJOR flaw that keeps us from calling ourselves FRP's. “You don't remember the times your dad held your handle bars. You remember the day he let go.” - Lenore Skenazy

Oct 9, 2019

This episode started as a bit of an accident, but led to something really great. Eugene was once asked (possibly by me!), "Do you consider yourself a feminist?" That question apparently led down a rabbit hole and ultimately to today's topic. And rather than having two dudes mansplaining feminism, we asked Professor Jennifer Lee Koh to join our conversation. In this episode, we talk about what feminism means to us, the underlying institution it's actually seeking to upend, and how feminism wins the future. Special thanks to Jennifer Lee Koh for gracing us with her thoughts and insight! And thank you for listening!

"Patriarchy is not the natural order of things. It's not that we can't help it. In fact, it's the opposite. We helped create it. Which means that change is not only possible, it's probable." - Liz Plank

In this second of our grab bag format, Eugene and David debate whether the Republican party has now officially become the party of white male nationalists. We also ask whether parents should be allowed to pick their child-to-be's gender, and whether new medical technologies like CRISPR or CAR-T “feel different." Finally, we reveal how we would spend $10,000 if we had to spend it on something fun. (Eugene is apparently shocked by David’s answer!) Next time, we’ll return to our normal format. “The most harmful aspect of the Graham/Pence rule is this: It keeps women out of the room. It says that men can forward their careers via mentoring sessions, golf games and brainstorming lunches, but women cannot. The Graham/Pence rule prevents women from climbing to the top of their careers because the men who have the power to help them get there won’t even let them in the room.” – Monica Hesse

Let me say this upfront: For some of us, the idea of spending $200 on a single pair of jeans sounds outrageous, while for others, it’s a bargain. For most of my life, I fell squarely in the first camp. Clothing has always been a complicated and sensitive topic for me, for reasons I get into here. In this episode, I talk about why for me my $200 pair of jeans represents a step toward taking ownership of my apparel (perhaps for the first time). Eugene and I also discuss how we like to shop for clothes, what we think our style represents, and some of our favorite brands. We hope you give this a listen!

“Gryffendor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, no matter in which house we are in; We all belong from Hogwarts, we all know magical arts.” – Ankisha Das

Aug 1, 2019

Are you a Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin? A few episodes back I talked about “channeling your inner Slytherin” and that got us thinking about the four houses of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In today’s episode, we talk about which house we think we belong in, the pros and cons of each house, and why sometimes your greatest strength can also be your greatest weakness. We hope we did right by Harry Potter fans out there. (More HP content to come!) As ever, thanks for listening!

“Hufflepuff is my favorite house in some ways. There comes a point in the book where each house has a chance to rise up to a certain challenge. The Slytherins decided they’d rather not play, the Ravenclaws – some play, some won’t, but the Hufflepuffs stay to fight. They didn’t want to show off, they weren’t being reckless, that’s the essence of Hufflepuff.” – JK Rowling

Here’s the bad news: It’s going to get uglier. After the news of the past week, I’m bracing myself for an election that may be the most vicious, toxic, and racially charged in my lifetime. On the other hand, I believe there’s a way out. What I mean is, there’s one message that democrats can focus on, that I believe would lead to an effective and winning strategy. It all comes down to just two simple words.

I’m not gonna lie, this one is personal for me. When I think back to why I started this podcast, at least at a subconscious level, it was partly because I wanted to speak out about this very topic. Many of the issues dividing “progressive” versus “traditional” believes have to do with human sexuality and gender. But as someone who grew up in the church, I believe there’s an even more fundamental problem at the core of traditional Christianity. It’s a problem I’ve thought about and have had many conversations about for years, it’s the central reason why I don’t consider myself a traditional Christian, and incidentally, it’s also a central reason why we’ve seen the explosive growth of “universalism” in recent years.

Very special thanks to my brother Eugene who was willing to engage with me in an open and respectful way on today’s episode. One of the things I absolutely love about this podcast is having a sibling and co-host who is capable of having a fun, interesting, and healthy dialogue on even thorny topics where we may disagree. Thank you brother! And as always, thank you everyone out there for listening!

We like to keep things practical on this podcast. A while back (Ep. 31), I talked about why grit is one of the most important characteristics to teach your kids for success, more important than talent or luck. But no one is ever going to “out grit” a computer. As long as it has enough power and functionality, a machine will just keep on doing what it’s programmed to. So how can human beings stand a chance of out-competing neural networks, deep learning, and the rise of machines? In today’s episode, Eugene and I discuss the one human trait we have that may make it possible for humans to stay a step ahead of machines, and what that means for the skill set you should prioritize in your job. (Channel your inner Slytherin.) As always, thanks for listening! :)

If you've been listening to this podcast for a while, hopefully you know our movie reviews are unlike what you typically find online. With the speed of social media, I feel like the Avengers moment has already passed and the current buzz is all about Always Be My Maybe. (Side note: Who would have thought in the "Bill and Ted" days that Keanu Reeves would be such a fantastic Asian American meme?!?) In this episode, Eugene and I breakdown our thoughts of the latest MCU  movie, why the Tony Stark/Pepper Potts storyline was so important to David, the two scenes respectively that made us cry, and more. Thanks for listening!
